I recently upgraded to the Katabatic Gear Wren Bivy after my Piñon was unfortunately stolen from my campsite in the Superstition Mountains last month. While that was a frustrating way to be forced into an upgrade, the Wren has absolutely proven itself and then some.
I took the Wren into the San Juans in winter, where conditions were cold, snowy, and exactly what you want a bivy to be tested in. The waterproof bathtub floor did its job flawlessly—snow melt and ground moisture were complete non-issues. The water-resistant upper fabric shed falling snow without any wetting-through, and most impressively, the breathability was outstanding.
Condensation is always my biggest concern with a bivy, especially on winter trips, and the Wren nailed it. Even after long, cold nights, there was no internal moisture buildup and my sleeping bag stayed completely dry. That balance of weather protection and airflow is hard to get right, and Katabatic absolutely did.
The build quality feels bombproof without being heavy or overbuilt, and it packs down easily for winter alpine objectives. This bivy inspires confidence—something you really appreciate when you’re committed deep in the mountains.
Losing my Piñon was a bummer, but after using the Wren in real winter conditions, I can say this was a meaningful upgrade. If you’re looking for a reliable, breathable, winter-capable bivy, the Wren delivers exactly what it promises.

Works great as an outer layer for alpha direct hoodie. Soft touch and seems to breath well. Fit is spot on. Craftsmanship is superb!

The 20 denier material makes this jacket ideal for thruhiking, it'll take a beating and keep going. Super warm, tons of loft, worth every penny.

I have only ONE wish after buying this jacket…I wish I had known about this company and their excellent gear earlier. I’ve owned many different light and mid-
weight down jackets and of all the known brands I’ve owned (not knocking them just stating my opinion)…Arcteryx, Montbell, RAB, Mountain Hardwear, this is my favorite. Why, you ask? Fit, finish and feel! It’s the most comfortable to me and it definitely keeps me warmer than the others. Next up for me is ditching my bag for a nice KG Flex quilt.

When you want to support a small business that innovates, you want to stand out in a crowd of puffy jackets and, most importantly, have the lightest and warmest down jacket. This is IT.
Katabatic never disappoints, but this jacket’s fit, warmth, and quality blew me away. It packs down super small and the fabric is so soft and not clammy when you throw it on in the morning.

I bought this quilt and took in on the Colorado Trail. It worked great. Very warm. Foot box is excellent, my feet are always toasty when I wake up. I have taken the quilt into the mid 20s on a clear dry night, and still felt very warm. I would say the quilt is warmer than any other 30 degree quilts on the market.

This is my first quilt, I have always used traditional mummy bags. Love the weight and how small it packs down, feels warmer to me than other 30 deg bags I have had in the past (which is a big win). Also give me enough room to move around (Im a restless sleeper).

Amazing warmth to weight ratio. I find the warmth rating is more accurate on these quilts compared to my Enlightened Equipment Quilts. Differential cut is amazing at keeping down distributed well with no cold spots coming through if I push an arm against the side. Elastic underneath does an excellent job of coming just high enough to make me feel tucked in but not claustrophobic while minimizing drafts with the included pad attachment cords. Overall, I am hard pressed to think of a better quilt on the market.

I like to use and abuse before I review. I think I’m there.
I’ve had 30+ nights in this bivy thus far, from 60 degree nights to about 15degrees. Paired with katabatics 30 degree palisades? Quilt. I usually
sleep fully clothed. And when it’s brisk outside or windy I’ll wear a puffy jacket. Haven’t been cold yet. I’ve set up my tent twice now (paired with this bivy when I knew bad weather was rolling in, but usually just toss the bivy out and crash. Ive woke up wet with condensation twice, due mostly to poor camp choice than a fault in the bivy.
The bivy is incredibly light weight. Which is awesome, but it’s very thin to always rely on as a protective barrier between you an sharp stuff or wet snow, I’ll toss my tent/tarp shelter underneath my bivy as an extra ground sheet if I’m in pokey grass or snow.
The bivy adds quite a bit of warmth, ide say 10degrees or so to the overall warmth of your sleep system. Cuts the wind exceptionally well, minus the mesh face cover.
The way this pairs with the sleeping pad(thermarest xtherm) and the clips on the quilt is fantastic. I toss and turn most every night and I never toss the quilt off me or slip off my pad.
Sorry for the wordy review, but I’m very impressed with this thing this far, no holes or visible signs of wear.

(Edit, I typically stake the corners, but have never done the trekking pole string thing the keep it off my face. I sleep with it open in good weather, otherwise quilt has enough loft to keep mesh off my face while I sleep).

I own one of these and a Sawatch and they are the warmest quilts I've ever slept in. I also have a bivy, and the pad attachement system being built into the bivy such that I can just roll the bivy, bag, and pad up at the beginning of the morning, roll it up, and stick it in my pack were awesome. Overall I cannot be happier with the quality of gear that Katabatic produces, and look forward to using this system next year on for many more miles! The bag brought me through the 4 pass loop around Maroon Bells in mid August, so I wasn't really stressing it on temperature, but a previous trip with my lower temperature rated bags through the Wind River range of Wyoming leaves me confident I could be comfortable down in to the rated temperature no problem.

it's like being enveloped in a weightless cocoon of warmth. I didn't take it all the way to 15F but it was cozy and roomy without being drafty down to around 30F (frost in the morning) and I'm a cold sleeper. It felt similar to my mountain hardware 3F bag, except incomparably less constrictive. LOVE IT.

I long debated the 850 vs 950 down, but you can’t go wrong with either. This quilt is extremely versatile, super lightweight, easy to pack, great quality, and I have had ZERO issues with drafts. I let my dad borrow mine for a trip and he immediately bought one himself. Highly recommend!!

I have had the 30 degree flex for years and recently took it on the Te Araroa in NZ. I wanted to lighten up my summer kit so I recently got the 40 degree flex and it exceeded all expectations. Light, compressible, and impressively warm. Used it down into the high 30s with a beanie and light clothes and was toasty warm. Highly recommend this quilt!

The Alsek 22 is the best quilt out of the 4 that I've had. I like that it has two attachment options - I like just using the straps and don't use the pad lines. It way the opening is shaped helps keep air from getting in.

Super easy to setup and incredibly warm!
